Western Region

2008 to 2009

Professional Linkages, Regulatory and Legislative agenda, Interagency Collaboration, Services, Program development and Management of Organizational Resources are PNAA's President Leo Jurado's mantra for his administration.

 

The activities of the Western Region are reflections of this administration's shining through the PRlSM of PNAA, honoring our tradition, and advancing our future.

 

Northern California - Cherinia Tinio President PNANC Retreat was held on August 23, 2008 at Sheraton Hotel. PNANC's successful Educational Conference and General Membership Meeting was held on October 15, 2008 at the Grosvenor hotel at San Francisco, CA. The TORCH newsletter was published and was mailed to all members. We have newly appointed PRO, Joseph C. Mojares.

 

We already have two board meetings this year and have attended Filipino Resource Center second anniversary and Siliman University Induction of officers as part of our PNANC visibility to the community. We are also hosting and collaboratively working with Lions Club, FEU, and lJP for the Filipino Veterans WWII Christmas Party that is going to be held on December 6, 2008 at the War Memorial Opera House at San Francisco, CA.

 

Central California - Maricon Estebar, President Philippine Nurses Association of Central California had their annual Fall Seminar last October 11, 2008 at Piccadilly Inn. The theme was: Nursing Profession: Curriculum Trends and Impact on Nursing Programs, Education, Research, and Management: Leadership and Practice. Stephanie Robinson, Director of Nursing, Fresno City College and Michael Russler, Chair, Department of Nursing, California State University, Fresno, CA. and two of PNACC previous scholars, Maureen Rico and John Biltz were part of the panel presentation. Attendees were awarded with 6 continuing education units.

 

The 19th Annual Dinner Dance - Induction of PNACC 2008 - 2010 Executive Board and Scholarship Awards was held on November 15, 2008. Three scholars were awarded this year; Ferdinand Rios of Fresno City College, Ruby-Lhee Andres & Melanie Olino of California State University, Fresno, California. Joyce Eden, MHA, RN, President of Nursing Leadership Council of Central San Joaquin Valley was the keynote speaker. and Nancy Hoff, founder of PNACC Chapter did the induction of the newly-elected officers.

 

Southern California - Brenda Cohen, President. In August 2008, PNA Southern California had an Executive Council Meeting and New Members Welcome and Luncheon Reception. In September, we provided First Aid Services at the Filipino American Arts and Culture Festival in Point Fermin' PNASC PNASCA Family Picnic; Executive Council! Advisory Board Meeting, PNASCA Induction of Officers and Fundraising Event. A planning meeting of Filipino American community leaders convened by Philippine Consul General Mary Jo Bernardo Aragon on the occasion of the visit to Los Angeles of Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was held in October. The Theme: Looking Thru the PRlSM: the Future is here was the focus of the Fall Seminar in November. At this event, the General Assembly, ratified PNASC Constitution and Bylaws; announcement and presentation by NOMELEC of newly elected Executive Council 2009-2010 Executive Council and Advisory Board Members at  Reception for Phil. Pres. Gloria Macapagill Arroyo.

 

Oregon/Washington - Lucy Laeser, President May 17, 2008 - Induction of New Officers for 02-08-2010. - by Josie Villanueva, Western Regional Vice President: President - Lucy Laeser, Vice President - Grace Rodriguera, Secretary – Myrna Isabel Mota, Treasurer - Madonna Deocares, Auditor- Mercy Galicia, PRO - Maria Susi, Adviser – Fred Calixtro. July proved to be a busy month with the following events: 4 delegates attended the 29th PNAA Annual National Convention, So. Padre Island, TX; PNA-OR/WA Meeting at, Providence Portland Medical Center. Portland; and Faith Cafe - serving the less fortunate citizens of the community. Other chapter activities include: participating in PNAA EB teleconference; conducting PNA-OR/WA Meeting and PNA-OR/WA Retreat at Ocean Park, W A. On December 11, 2008, the PNASC president was invited as representative to the Multicultural Advisory Council of the Linfield Good Samaritan School of Nursing. We ended the calendar year with a PNA-OR/W A meeting, a Christmas Party and PNA-OR/W A as host of the Christmas Simbang Gabi.

 

Hawaii - Joe Jacob, President. Joe Jacob was inducted by Leo Jurado as president of PNA Hawaii and his better half Marianela Jacob as the president-elect (a first in PNAA History). Senator Clarence Nishihara of Hawaii, the dean and several faculty of the University of Hawaii, and many community leaders attended the event. PNAH is also looking at possibly lobbying for the removal of CGFNS exam as a requirement prior to taking NCLEX. PNA Hawaii proudly achieved a partnership with the University of Hawaii on two research projects namely "Diabetes and Health is Wealth. " Yearly, PNA Hawaii participates with the Cancer Society Relay of Life, Volunteer to the Medical Reserve Corps." Other activities include Immunization School Program, Partnership with Nursing Advocates and Mentors, volunteer to the annual health fair at Leeward Community College. Gives free NCLEX review program, a member of the Hawaii Community Scholarship Foundation, offered in-service seminar to Hawaii Foster and Care Homes Operators funded by Western Union.

 

Arizona - Macbeth Torno, President. Interagency Collaboration, Services with the community and professional linkages have been the focus of Arizona Chapter. They have been very active in participating with community health fairs and fund raising programs.

 

Colorado - Edith Pasion, President. August 3rd, 2008- PNACO celebrated the second anniversary with a potluck lunch at the Lakehouse at Southshore attended by members and their families and friends. Election of the 2009-2010 was also held with Grace Senger accepting the position of President Elect for 2011-2012. October 25th, 2008- PNACO collaborated with the Colorado Asian Health Care and Promotion in conducting the Filipino Health Fair and Flu Immunization Clinic at the Aurora Municipal Center. There were over 70 people availed of the screening test for Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes, Asthma and Allergy and Bone Density Testing. Over 90 people were given free flu shots. Educational booths in Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Medication Safety were staffed by the members of PNACO.

 

November 8th, 2008- PNACO was one of the sponsors of the Saklolo 2 and the 6th Annual Filipiniana event of the National Federation of the Filipino American Associations (NAFF AA). Also featured in this event was the Lifetime Achievement A ward which was given to Edith Pasion, founding president of PNACO, for her volunteer work in several organizations in the Metro Denver area especially for her achievements as 2 term president of the Philippine American Society of Colorado.

 

San Diego - Elaine Soliven, President PNASD provided community outreach as First Aid responders during the two days in August at the Samahan Cultural Festival at Balboa Park. For fun, the annual picnic at Mission Bay also provided a summer get together for the membership who feasted on Filipino. PNASD celebrated its 34 Anniversary and Scholarship Ball in September. The PNASD continues to be an active participant in the immunization program of San Diego county through the California Health and Immunization Program The Filipino-American Festival celebration in National City on October 3 & 4th provided PNASD avenue to collaborate with the Hispanic Nurses Association of San Diego by providing support and manning the First Aid booth, thus strengthening professional linkages.

 

PNASD also raised $1000. 00 for the American Cancer Society, through the Susan B. Komen 5K walk at Balboa Park on October 19, 2008. Several CEU conferences were given in the month of October and November including topics on Juvenile Delinquency Las Vegas - Christy Sampal, RN, President PNA NEVADA was a participant in one of the local hospital's Diversity Kick-off on Sep 10, 2008. We also participated in the FIL-AM Heritage month's celebration last October, 2008.
